On July 18 Mayor Jim Kenney announced Philadelphia’s first community schools and Logan Elementary is listed as one of nine schools for the upcoming 2016-17 school year.

According to a press release, 31 public schools in the city applied and the Kenney administration plans to have 25 community schools during Kenney’s four year term. The community schools are public schools with a full-time coordinator from city government that identities that school’s and students’ most important needs and they use city assets to try to solve those issues.

Funding for this initiative comes from the country’s first citywide soda tax.

Public schools’ first through 12th graders are scheduled to go back to school on Sept. 7 and kindergarteners are scheduled to start on Sept. 14.
