Firefighters say a fire started around 3 a.m. on the 500 block of Geneva Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Neighbors told NBC10 that the homeowner escaped the home with his dog and went back in to save his other dog. The man and his pets made it out safely and the home owner was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center for burns and smoke inhalation.

One of the dogs died and the other was taken to Red Paw Emergency Relief Team.

At this time, fire fighters have not released the cause of the fire.
