Teachers Union Talk at Girls High: Wants New Contract and New Governor

Members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers met for a meeting at Girls High on 1400 W. Olney Ave. to discuss the impending school year and contract talks.

Philadelphia public schools will open on Sept. 8 with a smaller budget, a threat of more job firings and no contract since August 2013.

Union leaders called for the ouster of current governor Tom Corbett (R.) during the Nov. 4 Pennsylvanian gubernatorial election for more financial funding. The union also said it wanted control of the District back in the hands of City Hall.

The Notebook spoke to District spokesperson Fernando Gallard after the meeting and Gallard said the District was in talks with the large union on pay and a new contract.
